Mmmm-Hmmm.

I found the BEST Sweetest Day card at WalMart, courtesy of Hallmark.

Front: For Sweetest Day you should do something sweet...
Inside: I'm sweet.

And yes, I bought it (blushes).

Sweetest Day

Sweetest Day is a little-celebrated holiday that just to happens to fall on my birthday, October 18, this year. It's a fun little holiday, so here's a brief history:

Sweetest Day was first celebrated in Cleveland in 1921 and was "invented" by candy company employees in hopes of raising candy sales (it is perhaps more of a true "Hallmark holiday" than Valentine's Day) and creating a holiday that ranked with Mother's, Father's and Valentine's Days. Cleveland's 1921 Sweetest Day Committee distributed more than twenty-thousand boxes of candy to 'newsboys, orphans, old folk and the poor.' Sweetest Day was later attempted in New York and several other mid-western and New England cities but never caught gained popularity equal to that of the holidays it had been invented to rival. Though SD is currently an official holiday in the United States, celebrated the third Saturday of October, its popularity is regional and has its greatest celebrations in Cleveland, Detroit and Buffalo.

Ironically, I prefer Sweetest Day over Valentine's Day, due to its cute name and limited popularity. This might not be so had Valentine's not become the queen of the "Hallmark holidays." Oh, and it's close to my birthday each year. That helps.

Impressive

Mindy Smith's version of 'Jolene' is currently blowing my mind. So haunting and beautiful.

Equally amazing is the preference of this cover by the song's original orator. 'Jolene' has been officially covered more than thirty times and Mindy Smith released Dolly Parton's favorite version. Even if it had been critically-panned (it wasn't), there would be satisfaction in knowing the song's writer preferred your interpretation over several dozen other artists.

(Sigh).

Love is Hard - Beautiful Lyrics

I plan on blogging about this later but I wanted to share this with you.

These are the lyrics to Love is Hard, off James Morrison's new record, Songs for You, Truths for Me. I cannot even begin to explain how refreshing it is to hear someone attest to love’s difficulty. Lately I’ve been completely bombarded by idealistic, hyper-romantic love and it’s wearing on me. Not that I don’t want you to protect your hearts and strive for complete and utter bliss, but love, whether between friends or lovers, is a choice that needs to be made every morning regardless of the words spoken, gifts received or touches felt. It's not blind but it should be unconditional.

I see lovers in the streets walking without a care
They wear it out loud like there's something in the air
Well I don't care
They're treading lightly
There's no tracks to follow
They don't care where they're going
And if they're lucky they'll get to see
And if they're really, really lucky they'll get to feel

And it kicks so hard it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, hits your soul
Tears your skin and makes your blood flow
It's better that you know
That love is hard.

Love takes hostages and gives them pain,
Gives someone the power to hurt you again and again
But they don't care

And if they're lucky they'll get to see
And if they're really, really lucky they'll get to feel
And if they're truly blessed then they'll get to believe
And if you're damned you'll never let yourself be deceived

And it kicks so hard it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, hits your soul
Tears your skin and makes your blood flow
It's better that we know
That love is hard.

It kicks so hard it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, hits your soul
Tears your skin and makes your blood flow
It's better that we know
It kicks so hard it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, hits your soul
Tears your skin and makes your blood flow
It's better that we know
That love is hard

If it was easy it wouldn't mean a thing.

Love you,
.skart.

P/S. I’m happily married to a wonderful and beautiful man. My current emotional state is not a reflection of him, just my current wanderings.
